Taking care of your race magnets

Us at Magnet Race Numbers want to keep you running door to door and time attack events sporting our magnets all season long.

Here's some common FAQ about our podium finish magnetic panels.

How Do I Properly Apply My Racing Magnets?

For best contact and performance, follow these steps:

  1. Clean the surface – Ensure the area where you’ll place the magnet is clean, dry, and free from dust, wax, or debris.

  2. Apply on a flat metal surface – Racing magnets work best on smooth, steel panels. Aluminium, fiberglass, and carbon-fiber and other composites are non-magnetic and won’t hold the panel.

  3. Avoid placing over door gaps or hard body curves– Door gaps or harsh lines can reduce the magnet’s grip, increasing the risk of air being caught underneath coming off at high speeds. Place  the magnet on the flattest part of the panel for max adhesion.

  4. Ensure full contact – Smooth out any air pockets to ensure a flush fit.

Some scrutineers demand tape on the leading edge. Clear tape on the leading edge can help avoid air catching the magnet. I recommend this Bear Clear All Weather low-tact tape from Bunnings as it leaves very little residue.

Where Should I Place My Racing Magnets?

The best placement for your racing number panels depends on event regulations, but Motorsport Australia Schedule K advise:

  • Front doors – The upper most forward placement of the door.

  • Bonnet – Some events may require a third number panel.

How Do I Store My Racing Magnets?

Proper storage extends the lifespan of your magnetic panels:

  • Store them flat – Avoid tight rolling or harsh bending, as this may cause irreversible warping.

  • Keep in a dry place – Moisture build up can cause rust on metal panels if the magnet left on the car. Take them off once a week, wipe and refit or pack away.

  • Separate multiple magnets – Stack them with a protective sheet between each to prevent scratching or sticking.

How Do I Clean My Racing Magnets?

  • Use a mild detergent and water – Gently wipe with a soft cloth and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.

  • Dry thoroughly before reapplying – This prevents moisture from getting trapped between the magnet and your vehicle.

Can My Magnets Fall Off During a Race?

Yes, if not applied correctly. To prevent this:

  • Always clean the surface before application.

  • Ensure the magnet is fully flat with no lifted edges.

  • Regularly inspect the magnet’s condition for signs of wear.

These steps should get you through a season, two or more. Race hard. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us!
